ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The fascination with electricity began in ancient Greece when electric charges were produced by rubbing amber. It keeps growing with every new discovery and we have come to a stage where life without electricity is almost impossible. Electrical and Electronics Engineering has evolved into an exciting high technology discipline covering a wide spectrum of engineering activities. For young people, it provides employment opportunities of various nature and one can choose a career to suit his aptitudes .

Prof. A. Josephine Amala graduated in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Thiagarajar Engineering College (Autonomous), Madurai in 1991 and obtained her M.E. in Power Systems from Regional Engineering College , Tiruchirappalli in 1999. She received her Ph.D. degree in Computer Applications to Optimal Distribution System Planning from Barathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli in 2009. She has contributed original and algorithmic solution approaches for Distribution System Optimization.

She started her teaching profession from SRM Engineering College in 1995. She joined JJCET, Tiruchirappalli in 1996. Her areas of interest are Power System Studies and Algorithmic ( Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing.,) applications to Distribution System Planning Studies.

LABORATORIES

The department has 6 well equipped laboratories namely Electrical Machines Lab, Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering Lab, Control and Instrumentation Lab, Power Electronics, Microprocessor & Microcontroller Lab and Simulation Lab, .

ELECTRICAL MACHINES LAB

J:\EEE PHOTOS\DSC_4070.JPG It is a teaching lab for electrical machines. There are provisions for studying the characteristics and testing of various types of electrical machines. AC supply is received from the Electricity Board. DC supply is obtained through two sets of rectifier units with a loading capacity of 100A each. There are 18 DC machines, 16 AC machines and 11 transformers. The lab is equipped with loading facilities for motors and generators and meters of different ranges. The total value of equipments in this lab is around 21.5 lakhs. The work benches are built very safe and large enough to carry out the experiments comfortably. There are 32 work benches spread out in a floor space of 5000 sq.feet.

BASIC ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING LAB

The Lab was established in the year 2010. It is a teaching lab for electrical engineering practices. It has a floor area 1423 sq. m. and 18 work benches. The total cost of the equipments in this Lab was about 6.2 lakhs . The lab has three phase electricity supply. The lab is well equipped to conduct experiments related to electrical and electronics engineering practices. It has regulated DC power supplies, transformers, loading facilities, meters of different ranges down to micro levels, CROs, etc. The lab has facility to teach electrical wiring practices. The work benches are built very safe and large enough to carry out the experiments comfortably.

  CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATION LAB

Control and instrumentation lab was installed during the month of June 1997. It has floor area of 1440 sq.ft with 14 workbenches. The total value of equipments in this lab is around 32 lakhs. In this lab facilities are available to conduct various experiments related to control systems, measurement and instrumentation. In the same lab experiments related to 8085, 8086 microprocessors and 8051 microcontroller are performed. The lab is also provided with Keil software to carry out the embedded based projects.

POWER ELECTRONICS LAB

J:\EEE PHOTOS\DSC_4010.JPG Power electronics lab has floor area of 1536 sq.feet with 14 workbenches. The total cost of equipments in this lab was about 37 lakhs. In this lab facilities are available for the UG and PG students to carry out the experiments on Power Electronics and Drives, Electric Circuits and Electronics Devices and Circuits. The lab has about 05 DSP processor modules for experimentation and controller design for all types of motors including special machines. The system edition XILINX software is also available for design of controllers.

MICRO PROCESSOR & MICRO CONTROLLER LAB

The lab has a floor area of 1536 sq feet with 14 work benches. The total cost of the equipments in this lab was about 16 lakhs. The lab is well equipped to conduct experiments related to microprocessor and microcontrollers.

The lab has about 35 microprocessor trainer kits, 35 microcontroller kits and universal microcontroller programmer kit. The lab has a good numbers of interfacing kits to assemble Embedded system controllers for applications such as DC motor, AC motor, Stepper motor, Traffic light system etc,.

SIMULATION LAB

The department has developed this laboratory with an objective of providing knowledge on various computer languages and to develop computer models that simulate the performance of complex systems in Engineering and to improve its performance.

This lab has a floor area of 1080 sq.ft. To meet the requirements, the lab has various software packages related to power systems, power electronics, control system and electric circuits. This lab is utilized by both UG and PG students. Total cost of the equipments in this lab was about 36 lakhs.

• One server with 50 nodes of ACER, Pentium D processor, with 80 GB SATA hard disk and 512 DDR2 RAM

• The lab has a facility in the name “ SWAYAM” that telecasts on line NPTEL and other live courses by eminent professors from institutes such as NITs, IITs, IISC, etc..
